sound map: electric violence
October 27, 2009When we set out to put audio to the painting “Pure Electric Violence” the obvious inherent noise core implied in the title was an immediate concern. Early mixes were entirely consumed by walls of incoherent distortion. There ultimately came to be two entirely different interpretations: melody in time versus non-rhythmic a-tonal. The more pleasant of the two is sampled below:

putting sound to paintings
October 26, 2009In the spirit of collaboration, I’d like to begin a story:
Long before I began studying film and audio engineering I was majoring in studio art, trying my hand at painting. I came to realize that the two dimensional medium felt too limiting for me and I could not find a way for it translate my ideas clearly. Years later I saw paintings by an artist that completely drew me in. His paintings echoed a cosmic persona, a radiant universal voice. Looking at his work was almost like recollecting a memory and the artifice of the canvas was simply an extension of my own individual imagination. That painter was Rob Abeyta.
My interest in soundscapes does not immediately make me think of collaborating with a visual designer, but I was excited to see what would happen when Rob asked if I’d be interested in putting a score to some of his work. We started with an untitled painting he gave me previously. This project has gone through many revisions and changes since its conception. It’s been an interesting challenge to find a balance that appeases our mutual creative vision. Over the course of the last year and a half we’ve done several different versions, remixes, and arrangements but not all of them seemed to make sense. I find myself with a lot of dynamic recordings that are associated with brilliant imagery and I’m compelled to share some of what would otherwise go unfound.
The music for the painting below can be played by clicking on “Living Dream Machinery” via the post above. The original title of the audio piece was “Monodromy: Living Dream Machinery” and was 8 minutes of out-of-phase oscillating acoustic tones generated by magentic feedback.
I look forward to sharing more as we go and hearing from you along the way.

October 21, 2009We are survived by memory. This forum is a way for us to further our existence on a universal scale. As individual voices we are unique but as a collective we can create a new synthesis. Manifest through mixed mediums: film, music, painting, and the written word, our transmission begins here.
